I have said
good-bye to it all. ’
Chapter Six
Creeping along the dark narrow passage, with lantern held well ahead to keep
her step steady on the uneven stones—and to warn her of the advent of rats—
Melusine kept her long petticoats fastidiously clear of the dirt with an efficient
hand, a habit she had learned in the convent. It had certainly caused some havoc in the
uninhabited mansion, chewing through Holland covers to get at the furniture
beneath, and knocking down a fire guard and a couple of wooden stands. And, in addition, she was now seeing and talking to Ramage almost weekly,
on a theory which she took very gravely, that they were exceptionally friends. “That’s exhilarating,” said Ann Veronica. The girl was pretty, and apparently a
lady. ‘So it would appear. ”
“Then, by God!” he said, “you’ll be locked up!”
Ann Veronica was disconcerted for a moment. . ‘You are jealous!’
‘Yes,’ he agreed simply. Opening a pair of large black eyes, the child fixed them for an instant
upon Wood, and then, alarmed by the light, uttered a low and melancholy cry,
which, however, was speedily stilled by the caresses of his mother, towards
whom he extended his tiny arms, as if imploring protection. It was a tale of battle, murder, and
sudden death on the New York waterfront.
