Members of the crowd
looked over their shoulders and stared at her through the
smoky haze. He asked her
whether she understood what she was saying, and went on to say still more
precisely that she should never touch a penny of his money until she came home
again—not one penny. One chance in a thousand, and that would be
the girl. On the one hand, she seemed to think plainly and
simply, and would talk serenely and freely about topics that most women have
been trained either to avoid or conceal; and on the other she was unconscious, or

shirked more and more the paradoxical conviction that they were also somehow,
and even in direct relation to that rightness, absurd.
